AI answer engines are replacing traditional search for millions of users. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity now answer questions directly — often without sending users to your website. The question isn't whether your site needs to be optimized for AI. It's how far behind you already are.
We used FastAEOCheck to audit over 21,000 websites across 9,448 unique domains, measuring their readiness for AI answer engines across 7 key categories: content quality, structured data, technical SEO, authority signals, AI crawler access, schema markup, and GEO readiness.
The results are sobering.
The Big Picture: Most Websites Are Failing
The average AEO score across all domains is 51.6 out of 100 — barely a passing grade. But that average masks an even harsher reality: 44.1% of all websites scored an F, meaning they have almost no optimization for AI answer engines.
Only 1.3% achieved an A+ rating (score 90+), while just 10.5% earned an A or A+. The vast majority — over 60% — scored a D or F.
Grade Distribution
| Grade | Percentage | Count |
|---|---|---|
| A+ (90-100) | 1.3% | 280 |
| A (80-89) | 9.2% | 2,001 |
| B (70-79) | 15.1% | 3,287 |
| C (60-69) | 14.2% | 3,080 |
| D (40-59) | 16.1% | 3,508 |
| F (0-39) | 44.1% | 9,582 |
Score Distribution
Nearly 1 in 5 websites (19.3%) scored below 30, meaning they have virtually zero AI visibility. The largest group — 30.3% — falls in the 50-69 range, suggesting partial optimization but significant gaps.
- 90-100: 1.3% — Fully optimized, AI-ready
- 70-89: 24.3% — Good foundation, room to improve
- 50-69: 30.3% — Partial optimization, major gaps
- 30-49: 24.8% — Minimal AEO presence
- 0-29: 19.3% — Essentially invisible to AI
The Top Performers
A handful of websites are getting AEO right. The top 10 highest-scoring domains demonstrate what's possible:
| Rank | Domain | Score | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | omnius.so | 98 | A+ |
| 2 | vwo.com | 97 | A+ |
| 3 | quillbot.com | 97 | A+ |
| 4 | brex.com | 96 | A+ |
| 5 | kajabi.com | 96 | A+ |
| 6 | asana.com | 96 | A+ |
| 7 | wordlift.io | 96 | A+ |
| 8 | hostinger.com | 96 | A+ |
| 9 | surfshark.com | 96 | A+ |
| 10 | mailchimp.com | 96 | A+ |
What these sites have in common: comprehensive structured data (JSON-LD schema), clear FAQ sections, fast page loads, AI-friendly robots.txt configurations, and content structured in a question-and-answer format that AI engines can easily parse and cite.
Notable: WordLift.io — a company that literally sells AI SEO tools — scores 96. They practice what they preach.
The Worst Performers
At the bottom of the rankings, some well-known brands are almost completely invisible to AI answer engines:
| Rank | Domain | Score | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | lucid.com | 5 | F |
| 2 | donzelli.it | 5 | F |
| 3 | vfsglobal.co.uk | 5 | F |
| 4 | sbb.ch | 7 | F |
| 5 | pepsico.co.uk | 7 | F |
| 6 | thewired.ch | 7 | F |
| 7 | switch.ch | 7 | F |
| 8 | guim.co.uk | 7 | F |
| 9 | dtek-dnem.com.ua | 7 | F |
| 10 | lsapp.eu | 7 | F |
Scoring 5-7 out of 100 means these sites have almost no structured data, no AI crawler access, no FAQ schema, and content that AI engines struggle to parse. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity about these brands, the AI is essentially guessing — or citing competitors instead.
Key Takeaways
1. The AEO gap is massive. The difference between the top performers (96-98) and the bottom (5-7) is enormous. Companies investing in AEO now have a significant competitive advantage that will only grow as AI search usage increases.
2. Most companies haven't started. With 44% scoring F, nearly half of all websites have done zero optimization for AI answer engines. This represents both a warning and an opportunity — early movers will dominate AI-generated results.
3. Basic fixes go a long way. Many sites fail on fundamentals: missing structured data, blocked AI crawlers, no FAQ schema, no llms.txt file. These are quick fixes that can move a site from F to C or even B within days.
4. SaaS companies lead, legacy brands lag. The top performers are predominantly SaaS and tech companies. Traditional brands and regional businesses are significantly behind, creating an opening for early adopters in those sectors.
5. The bar is low — for now. With an average score of 51.6, even modest optimization puts you ahead of the majority. But as awareness grows, the competitive threshold will rise fast.
